“Everything is falling apart”: unpublished story of the European migratory routes

Seven years of stories collected on as many rolls of paper thirty meters long each, they tell the story of the European migratory routes in an art exhibition at the Hospitale di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme in San Tomaso di Majano

MAJANO – Sette lunghi anni di storie raccolte lungo le principali rotte migratorie europee diventano oggi una mostra d’arte: “Everything is falling apart”. The exhibition will be inaugurated on Sunday 22 maggio, at 18, in the splendid setting of the Hospital of San Giovanni di Gerusalemme in San Tomaso di Majano and will remain open until 5 June, open to visitors on Saturday and Sunday from 10 at 12 and give them 15 at 18. THE EXHIBITION – “Everything is falling apart” – curata da Eva Comuzzi – esporrà sette rotoli di carta, thirty meters long each, on which the “Menti Libere” collective, together with the artist Tommaso Sandri, they collected drawings of migrants encountered along the main European and non-European emigration routes, dal 2015 to date. The exhibition is the first event of the “MigrArt: L’arte come incontro” che vedrà l’associazione Menti Libere impegnata nell’organizzazione di rassegne e residenze d’arte, thanks to the support of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region and in collaboration with many partners in the regional territory. The artist, on display, addresses the delicate topic of migration starting from the narrative methods with which we approach them, trying their hand at a practical and symbolic use of the scrolls. Even the choice of the location that will host the works is not random: the Hospital (beautifully restored recently) è una struttura risalente alla fine 12° secolo e nata per ospitare pellegrini e viandanti. Right there it will be possible to take part in an interactive journey that, accompanied by video, archival material and contemporary reinterpretations of the scrolls, will take visitors inside the stories of the emigrants and the places they come from and that they encountered during the months of travel: from Asia, to Africa passing through Europe. «I sette rotoli in mostra, exuding stories and emotions, sogni e paure – ha spiegato Tommaso Sandri -, they represent an egalitarian narration of the intimate and personal sides of the migratory epics that characterize our time. Ognuno di loro è una raccolta di testimonianze dirette e universalmente fruibili. Un inno alla multiculturalità̀ insita in ognuno di noi».

THE MIGRART PROJECT – The MigrArt travel project was born in 2015 from an idea of ​​the Menti Libere collective who decided to undertake the Balkan route, backwards. At the end of that year Tommaso Sandri, Alessandro Sandri and Paolo Tavani left from Friuli, always a crossroads of peoples, reaching the Turkish-Syrian border in three months. During the trip, the roll of paper and colored markers were the means of communication between the three men and the people they met, as well as an immediate relief kit in those dramatic situations, for adults and children. In the following years, Tommaso Sandri ha “esportato” il format del rotolo intraprendendo altri viaggi dal Sud Italia a Calais e più di una volta in Bosnia, with the Artistic Caravan of Udine. The latest project is dated 2020, with a trip that took him to Mali, for years troubled by an internal conflict veiled by global interests.
