History

It all stems from the desire of some friends to create creative and constructive aggregation situations starting with the reclamation of degraded green areas in Lignano Sabbiadoro, nel North-East of Italy.

In the 2014 the Association wins a regional tender on the promotion of Active Citizenship thanks to which it manages to expand and amplify its activities and its range of action.

The first experiences developed in the field of mural painting, with the realization in 2015 of the first community mural under the guidance of the established writer Francesco Patat in which, as well as some local kids, about ten Pakistani and Afghan asylum seekers hosted in Lignano are also involved.

Nell’autunno successivo tre membri dell’associazione intraprendono una delle esperienze più significative del gruppo, the “MigrArt” project.

The three retrace the Balkan route in reverse, spending time in refugee camps and interacting with people through a thirty meter roll of paper on which everyone expressed themselves freely. This scroll turns out to be a precious narrative document and an original collective work of art then exhibited to the public in various regional exhibitions, from Avostanis to Villacaccia di Lestizza to Harvest in Dordolla.

Il rotolo stesso è stato al centro della performance multimediale che ha girato l’Italia nel marzo 2017 touching among others the Moltivolti in Palermo, the former Filangieri nursery school in Naples and the MAAM museum in Rome.

For years Menti libera has been promoting the “MigrArt: art as an encounter'', che tratta tematiche attualissime come sostenibilità̀ ambientale e migrazioni attraverso l’arte contemporanea.

Parallelamente si è consolidata nel gruppo anche una forte propensione alla didattica, which has structured a highly innovative multidisciplinary methodology thanks to which creating together strengthens individual and group dynamics.

In recent years, important participatory art projects have been carried out both in Italy, in collaboration with many schools and municipal administrations, both abroad, from Mali to Türkiye in collaboration with associations and NGOs.
