open call: COASTAL DESIGN: until, creativity, plastic, and tides

Selection of 10 artists and artists, designer e maker under 35 for a free training and planning course in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

A project that transforms waste into beauty.

Imagine a beach. The sun, the smell of the sea, the sound of the waves. And imagine that everything you see around you – the sessions where you relax, the umbrellas that shelter you, the elements that design the space – they were born from something that someone had thrown away. From plastic waste collected here and transformed into designer furnishings thanks to creativity.

Coastal Design

it is a project that wants to rethink the seaside world through the lenses of the circular economy, of beauty and collaboration between different worlds: the art, he design, craftsmanship, tourism. We are looking 10 artists, designer e maker, with the desire to get involved, learn and plan with us a new way of living on the beach. No specific plastic skills are needed: we are rather looking for curiosity, sensitivity to environmental issues and desire to experiment. We will build the rest together.

A journey in two stages

The path offered is a training and co-planning laboratory curated by THE(TIGHT e PlasticArt which will be held on 18 e 19 May in Udine. To each and every one of you 10 participants will be guaranteed a reimbursement of travel/food expenses 200€. It won't be a boring frontal course, but an immersive experience: we will explore participatory design practices together, plastic as a material and its environmental impact, its recycling possibilities and the techniques for processing it, but also the context in which we will operate. The objective is to create furnishings that during the summer season will find a home in some of the project's partner beach establishments, becoming an integral part of the experience of those who frequent those beaches.

The second phase is the prototype creation process. Three artists of the group will be selected and will have everything they need to turn their idea into reality. The three best projects will be selected and a economic contribution for production (€ 1500), recycled plastic materials, access to processing machinery and constant support from expert mentors – plastic technicians, designer senior, artists.

Who we are looking for

There is no rigid profile. We are looking for artists who want to deal with matter and function, designers who believe in sustainability as a concrete practice, makers who love experimenting with materials. The important thing is to have at least 18 years, a good knowledge of Italian to follow the meetings and a strong motivation to work in a group and deal with a complex topic such as recycling. Any previous experience will be appreciated, even small, in the field of sustainable materials, of creative recycling, of participatory planning, but it is not an essential requirement. Passion and the desire to learn matter more.

How to apply

To participate, simply submit by 15 April a single email to the address info@mentilibere.org with object “Candidatura Coastal Design – [Name and Surname]“. A. must be attached to the email single PDF file that contains three things:

  • Your CV, where you tell us who you are and what you have done so far, with particular attention to the projects that best represent your work (max 2 pages, images from your portfolio are also fine).

  • A short letter of motivation, written with the heart rather than the head, in which you explain why this project interests you, what do you think you can bring to it and what do you hope to receive from this experience (massimo 1000 characters).

  • A preliminary idea, if you already have it. It is not mandatory, ma se hai già in mente qualcosa — un bozzetto, a sketch, una descrizione — saremo felici di vederla. It doesn't have to be a definitive project, just a taste of your way of thinking (max 2 pages).

The selection

We will above all evaluate the quality of your artistic or design path, the coherence of your research with the themes of the call and your motivation to participate in a collective experience. The results will be communicated via email by 20 April 2026.

The Free Men Collective on the Balkan routes, 10 years later: Bulgaria

After ten years we returned to retrace the same Balkan route to understand and witness the changes underway.
We leave from Trieste in nine. A heterogeneous group made up of artists, photography, cooks and a videomaker. A month of travel and a fully equipped van.
After two weeks between Bosnia and Serbia, with the sight of a Frontex pickup stationed in one of the last Serbian mountain roads before the border, let's go in Bulgaria.

We have arrived in a town of twenty thousand souls that seems like one of those places forgotten by God, e, pare, also from Europe.
Harmanli, south east of Bulgaria, it is a stone's throw from the triple border with Greece and Türkiye. We are here thanks to the contacts of the Collettivo Vicenza Balkan Routes and guests of the German NGO MedicalSolidarietyInternational.
A city without news, which does not convey a clear narrative of itself. A gray spectrum that shows its variations in color to the maximum. Grey, such as the area that includes its border with Turkey: the first wall with which the EU defends itself from incoming migratory flows.

A rainbow breaks through the gloomy clouds, giving a moment of carefreeness. It rises exactly at the point where the gaze meets the official field for people on the move. a large building, giallo. Worn out.
At this moment there are about two hundred people, a small number compared to previous months. The border has become increasingly insurmountable, increasingly frequent and often violent illegal pushbacks. In the solo 2024 the Bulgaria rejected at its borders 50.000 people. In fact, there are more and more cases of border police violence against people on the move. Proof of this is the recent confirmation by Frontex of the guilt of the Bulgarian authorities for the deaths from hypothermia of three Egyptian minors. The rainbow lasts exactly two minutes, then the colors disperse in the vacant gazes of those few citizens walking around the city. The rainbow lasts two minutes, less than the time it takes to drink a coffee.

Inside the Harmanli camp, two hundred people including families and unaccompanied minors live waiting for a response to their request for humanitarian protection, a pass to continue the journey, with hope in the heart of a brighter Europe.

During our artistic activities with people in the Bulgarian town, we collect dozens of drawings in the long roll of paper that is accompanying us. Small moments of lightheartedness, stories that come to life thanks to colors. Drawings of houses fill it, of dreams and flags, their roots. Most of the people in Harmanli are from Syria and Syrian Kurdistan, but there are also Palestinian families and Moroccan and Egyptian children.

We know a Kurdish-Syrian family who fled Rojava, who tells us his story. Ali and Lyana (fictitious names), husband and wife, pregnant with a girl, and two children of 9 e 12 years. They manage to cross the border between Türkiye and Bulgaria, but a nightmare awaited them that they had not experienced even in Türkiye. The police catch them and separate them, takes them to the Lyubimets detention camp. For a week they know nothing about each other. Then they are finally gathered in a closed room together with other people. The window is closed, it's summer, Lyana is in her fifth month. There is no oxygen. The camp doctor sneakily brings them a ventilator. On more than one occasion the camp agents try in vain to convince Ali to sign the voluntary repatriation form to return to Syria, a country still crossed by numerous widespread conflicts which the EU however considers safe.
A nightmare that lasted three months, from which this family fortunately emerged, managing to find a minimum of stability thanks to immense tenacity. Ali works as a cook, big children, who learned Bulgarian in the detention camp, they go to school. They found a small apartment to stay. The owner has guaranteed that he will not send them away. Children drive the family's hope.

A situation, the Bulgarian one, surrounded by a gray cloud. As the border becomes more and more insurmountable, the numbers of people entering are decreasing, NGOs operating in the area are also decreasing and media attention is decreasing. To the detriment of people who often remain stuck in that limbo of waiting which becomes impotence and generates further trauma.
In that same limbo where though, despite it all, there are still volunteers and humanitarian workers, almost always women, who spend themselves on the front line of reception.

The Free Men Collective on the Balkan routes, 10 years later: Trieste - Sarajevo, the first part of the journey

Trieste, Republic Square. Dozens of people in front of the train station, of various nationalities, welcome the group of volunteers, and some volunteers, of the Linea d'ombra Association. The association brings support to people on the move every day that arrive from the Balkan routes: food, dressings, blankets and clothing.

The scroll contains the first drawings, words of peace and freedom, many languages ​​and cultures united in a single story to write together in the long month of long journey the Balkans that awaits us.

Many people leave their mark on the long piece of paper that gives ten years the Menti Libere Collective has been taking along the migratory routes.

Over the last fifteen years the Balkan routes have drastically changed, come, more generally, those pointing to Fortress Europa.

Send it 2010, with the entry into force of the regime visa free, the number of asylum seekers continued to rise and peak beyond 700.000 people who passed through 2015, in the middle of that year the situation changed with a rapid domino effect.

When the Hungarian Orbàn announces the closure of his borders with Serbia and Croatia in June, almost all the pressure of the flow is concentrated on Croatia and Slovenia, transforming the upper part of the Western Balkans into a bottleneck and inaugurating the "race to fortification".

In November the various states erect barbed wire walls along their southern borders and Austria, Slovenia and Croatia decide to let only Syrians through, Iraqi and Afghan.

The welcome of the operators of the center for minors in Bihać brings us back to that feeling of welcome, sharing, intimacy, which makes the house a nomadic place, a backpack that you carry with you, full of memories, identity, dreams. A backpack to open, empty, leaving small crumbs along the way, exchanges and gifts to share, to then return to fill it and resume the journey.

Bihac, insieme a Velika Kladusa, it has been a crucial point for migratory flows in recent years, place of passage from which to begin this last part of Game, the dangerous and very difficult Croatian section of the route dotted with control devices, police and criminal gangs.

The girls and boys of the IPSIA center for minors, the Italian institute that manages the center for minors and has been operating in Bosnia since 1997, they welcome us with open arms. Dario, Natasha, Viktoria, Martina: four of seven Roma brothers. They speak Bosnian, English, French.

His father, Gambian activist killed because he opposed the regime, he gave him a passion for reading. There are also an Egyptian boy and a Syrian boy. A fleet of brave souls, intrepid, disarming. Pending.

We didn't come here just to meet them and learn, by those who work in the field with professionalism and above all with humanity, how the Balkan route has changed and is changing today.

Let's take out our weapons, the cans, which in the hands of these people are starting to transform the white wall of the centre: a winged dove, symbol of peace and freedom.

A message that can accompany, with its colors and shapes, the days that children spend in this place.

In the meantime, the scroll touches various points of the Bosnian town and comes across in Jamal, thirty year old Moroccan boy. Nice guy, elegant, with a blue wool hat. He loves the cold and would like to go to Norway.

He tells us about his childhood in Morocco in the orphanage where he grew up. He draws his desert for us, the famous city of Ouarzazate and shows us his temporary home: a tent in an abandoned house. He lives alone, so as not to attract attention, and why loves solitude.

But also because Lipa's official camp, managed by the Ministry, It is nestled in the mountains and is more than 100 meters away from the town 25 km.

Jamal tried four times to cross the border to reach Slovenia, in vain. Tre volte da solo, the last one, with three other boys. After days of walking crossing rivers and mountains, il The biggest obstacle was the Croatian police, who sent them back to Bosnia: pushback.

When the police aren't the ones carrying out these illegal pushbacks, the criminal gangs who patrol the borders take care of them, robbing and sometimes kidnapping people in transit.

Guy Nzolani tells us about it, who together with his two cousins ​​was stopped by Afghan mafiosi on the Bosnian-Croatian border. A journey, that of game, that turned out for them, as for thousands of other people, a nightmare.

Fortunately the criminals did not find any cash, but only the cell phones of the three. From Congo they arrived directly in Türkiye, and then get stuck in the Balkan bottleneck. They returned to an official camp in Sarajevo's industrial area, to regain strength and perhaps even money before trying it again for the umpteenth time game cwith a secret ingredient: the typical West African attitude to smile, which for now resists.

Lignano Riot

Il 25 September, Thursday, at 17:00 al Municipio di Lignano Sabbiadoro inaugurerà la mostra “Lignano Riot” di Michele Bazzana, result of the study carried out by the artist on the events that led Lignano Sabbiadoro to autonomy from the Municipality of Latisana in 1958.

The research was developed during a residency held in Lignano and part of the Migrart in residence program of the Menti Libere association.

An initial formalization of the project took place at Terrazza a Mare in 2023.

In this second exhibition moment the artist gives us other aspects of his research through a visual reflection that intertwines archive materials and original productions.

Set up in the Town Hall spaces, the exhibition is made up of a series of displays/sculptures that host videos, projects and documentation created by Bazzana over the last few years, as part of a path oriented towards the production of a permanent work. The latter is designed to be placed in the symbolic place of the revolt, so that the passage of citizens and visitors is transformed into a moment of memory and reflection.

Dal 4 september to 12 October Bibione will host the second edition of the Festival Flat calm with a program of public meetings, projections, shows, beach experiences and workshops for people of all ages.

Now in its second edition, the Festival – organized by the Free Minds Association, with the patronage of the Municipality of San Michele al Tagliamento and the contribution of Banca Credifriuli, ABIT, Bibione Green&Smart srl Benefit Company, Lions Club Bibione and AVIS-AIDO Bibione – proposes to “smuovere le acque” e promuovere la conoscenza e la tutela dell’ecosistema marino e degli habitat naturali costieri, put at risk by human actions.

A widespread event in the seaside resort area, to connect and animate its places, favoring valuable natural contexts and promoting their knowledge and protection, for the well-being of our species and all organisms that inhabit them.

The program of the second edition: Ascolto profondo—Suoni in emersione

The second edition of Flat calm – Deep listening, emerging sounds – explore the sonic creativity of the seas and oceans, reminding us that these are anything but silent environments. There are many marine organisms that emit sounds to communicate, to orient yourself, to defend themselves from predators or for courtship. However, noise pollution generated by human activities is causing the decline of several species of cetaceans and fish. Coral reefs are becoming silent environments. How we can educate ourselves in conscious listening and tune back into the sonic creativity of the Blue Planet?

The Festival will inaugurate Thursday 4 September at 20:30 with an outdoor cinema evening in the splendid setting of Punta Baseleghe, overlooking the lagoon of Caorle and Bibione. Il Camping Capalonga will host the screening of the award-winning docu-film Blue Carbon, thanks to the partnership with Wake Europe Project, an important European project of awareness and civic awakening, founded by international journalists Annalisa Piras and Bill Emmott. On a journey between music and science, the music producer, DJ and marine biologist Jayda G will invite us to listen carefully to the messages of the Blue Planet, exploring the potential of the oceans to fight climate change and the importance of conserving coastal habitats. At the end of the screening there will be a debate with Barbara Favaro, responsible for international blue carbon projects.

There are many creative workshops to raise awareness among young generations and stimulate their imagination.

Thanks to the collaboration with Cas*Aupa and the support of WWF Marine Protected Area of ​​Miramare, during the days of the Festival a sound totem made of recycled plastic will be set up, which will broadcast some underwater sound recordings of aquatic animals.

The Bibione Lighthouse, symbol of the locality and point of reference on the Upper Adriatic coast for cultural and artistic promotion, he will also be the protagonist of a morning dedicated to dissemination, theater, workshops and immersive experiences on the beach.

Sunday 7 September, starting from 10:30, on the Calma Piatta stage they will alternate family theater show “Silence, the sea speaks!” a cura della compagnia Teatrobàndus e l’meeting “Art and science listening”, which will see the dialogue marine biologist and researcher at CNR-ISMAR Venice Marta Picciulin with the curator and cultural designer of the Etrarte Association Eleonora Cedaro. The meeting will be moderated by Maria Cristina Pedicchio, President of the National Agency for the Promotion of European Research.

Two important events to immerse ourselves in the soundscapes of the sea depths and learn about the potential of art and science to cooperate in synergy to promote knowledge of the sonic creativity of the seas and the risks linked to human-induced noise pollution.

I più piccoli potranno partecipare all’attività didattica “Intrighi subacquei”, organized by the WWF Marine Protected Area of ​​Miramare: a team game to explore marine biodiversity and some issues that threaten its conservation.

The Festival is also enriched with two immersive proposals on the beach adjacent to the Lighthouse, to awaken deep listening and discover the complexity of a world that lives beneath the waves and whose existence is increasingly put at risk by the impact of human activities.

First date Friday 5 September at 18:00 with the somatic laboratory “Beyond sound”, hosted by Marta Sandri, in which to playfully and intuitively explore the creative force of our bodies and voices in resonance with the sounds of nature.

Second appointment Sunday 7 September at 18:30, with the racconto sonoro “Silenzioso Sommerso Story”. An immersive narrative in the sonosphere of the seas and oceans, created by artists Alexandra Genzini and Marco Stefanelli in collaboration with the OGS. A unique experience to be enjoyed collectively by the sea at sunset.

The events of October

The Festival will close in October with two dates designed to involve the local community during the low season and promote active citizenship actions and care of the territory.

Thursday 9 October at 20:30 at the Savoy Beach Hotel, The researcher of the CNR-Ismar Venice Fantina Madicardo and the Marine geologist Fabio Trincardi, former director of Department of Earth System Sciences and Environmental Technologies of the CNR, in Rome, they will dialogue on stage to highlight the “Visible and invisible anthropogenic impacts on coastal systems: from erosion to noise pollution". For reasons of weather and to arrive at the end of the protection of biodiversity, we were forced to postpone the cleaning of the island of S.Andrea scheduled for Sunday 23.
Cleaning is postponed to Saturday 29 March and will be held on the long lagoon of Lignano, with meeting point (and post-cleaning entertainment) set in the Park of the Church of San Zaccaria at 15.
In this case the event will not require any registration fee and the number of participants has no limits.
